ARTICLE OF CIVIL ENGINEERING :THE LONGEST BRIDGE IN INDONESIA
Suramadu Bridge, The Longest Bridge In Indonesia
Suramadu Bridge, with a length of 5438 m is the longest bridge in Indonesia today. This bridge across the Madura Strait, connecting Java Island (in Surabaya) and Madura Island (in Bangkalan, precisely east Kamal), Indonesia. Suramadu bridge consists of three parts: the causeway, the bridge (approach bridge), and the main bridge (main bridge).
Suramadu Bridge is basically a combination of three types of bridges with an overall length of 5.438 meters with a width of approximately 30 meters. This bridge provides four lanes of two-way width of 3.5 meters with two emergency lanes as wide as 2.75 meters. This bridge also provides a special lane for motorcyclists on each side of the bridge.
Suramadu bridge consists of three parts:
1. Overpass or Causeway
The overpass or Causeway is built to connect the construction of the bridge by road through shallow waters on both sides. This flyover consists of 36 spans along 1,458 meters on the Surabaya side and 45 spans along 1,818 meters on the Madura side.
This flyover uses a 40-meter PCI buffer construction per span supported by 60 cm diameter steel pipe foundation.
2. Bridge bridge or approach bridge
Bridge bridge or approach bridge connecting the main bridge with overpass. The bridge consists of two parts with a length of 672 meters each.
The bridge uses a 80-meter concrete buffer construction per span with 7 spans per side supported by a 180 cm diameter support foundation.
3. The main bridge or main bridge
The main bridge or main bridge consists of three parts, namely two side spans along 192 meters and a main span along the 434 meters.
The main bridge uses cable stayed construction supported by twin towers as high as 140 meters. The bridge floor uses a composite construction as thick as 2.4 meters.
To accommodate sea vessel ships that cross the Madura Strait, this bridge provides free space as high as 35 meters from sea level. It is in this section that the development becomes difficult and hampered, and also causes the construction cost to swell.
The bridge was officially opened by President Megawati Soekarnoputri on August 20, 2003 and inaugurated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on June 10, 2009. The construction of this bridge is aimed at accelerating development on Madura Island, covering infrastructure and economy in Madura, which is relatively behind compared to the region others in East Java. Estimated cost of this bridge construction is 4.5 trillion rupiah.
This bridge construction is done from three sides, either Bangkalan side or Surabaya side. Meanwhile, simultaneously also carried out the development of the middle span consisting of main bridge and approach bridge
